Ephesians Part 2

What does it actually mean to be spiritually dead, and how does that change when God steps in? Ephesians 2:1-10 gives us one of the most honest and searching diagnoses in all of Scripture. Before God intervenes, Paul describes us not as slightly off course or in need of minor adjustments, but as dead in trespasses and sins, walking under the influence of the world, the enemy, and our own corrupt desires. It is a picture that pulls no punches. Yet right at the lowest point of that diagnosis, two words change everything: but God. Rich in mercy, overflowing with love, and acting entirely on his own initiative, God makes alive those who were spiritually lifeless. The passage invites us to sit with the weight of both realities, where we were and where God has moved us, so that we can begin to grasp just how extraordinary his power and love truly are. When we understand the depth of the death we were rescued from, the resurrection life we now have in Christ becomes something we cannot take for granted.
